A supporting site for the PBS serier WordGirl this website is designed to promote a love of language and words. Contains a number of different games as well as supporting lesson plans and classroom activities in the teacher section. Highlighted games inlcude:
Captain Huggy Face's Freeze Frame!
This fill-in-the-blank sentence game teaches students new words. Students watch an online episode of WordGirl. At key moments the episode will pause on a particular frame. A sentence missing one word will pop-up to describe the scene or characters and the student chooses the correct answer to complete the sentence. The choices are engaging and unambiguous. Students will find it amusing to try out each word and eliminate the more absurd selections.
Worrrrd Up!
This game is an opportunity for students to learn more about the history and background of WordGirl. WordGirl is trying to get through an underground maze that actually looks like a crossword puzzle! When she comes to a locked gate, the student is asked a question about WordGirl. The correct answer not only unlocks the gate, but also helps Becky, WordGirl’s alter-ego, transform into WordGirl. Worrrd Up! demonstrates the importance of character development. At the end of the game, students can download a certificate that deems them a “WordGirl All-Star!”
Power Words
Power Words challenges students to find words whose definitions can be seen visually. Each question shows WordGirl and Captain Huggy Face in various predicaments. The situation is presented to the student, who in turn chooses the best word to help save the day.
Comic Strip
WordGirl stars in her very own classic superhero comic strip where students help choose her adventure. The outcome of the comic strip is determined by which word the use selects. Students can print their comic strips at the end of the game. This game is a chance for students to feel masterful over story telling and language and will be especially appealing to students who may be struggling with reading and writing.
