This site contains historic maps with supporting lesson plans for teachers. The maps/lessons are organized into 6 major themes: - discovery and encounter - migration and settlement - environmental history - the historical geography of transportation, political and military history - the geography of American communities You can access the modules though the Map and Lesson Index page. Each module has 4 age specific lesson plans based on one or more primary map documents Maps open in a separate window that permit users to enlarge and pan the image to reveal details. Notes are also attached that provide historical background about the map. The notes are primarily for teachers, but may also be useful for high school and some middle school students. Each module also includes supplemental texts, documents, and/or images of maps, prints, and photographs that will help your students' understand the periods and issues discussed in the various lesson plans. The "Instructions for Teachers" section also contains instructions on how to read historical maps and an excellent map analysis form.
